When a doctor confirms Stan's worst fears, his first reaction is to give up all hope. But he soon discovers an optimism he didn't know he had, seizing the opportunity to realize his unfilfilled ambitions, recruiting the help of his full-grown children, Chris and Deirdre. But after a lifetime of marital issues, his wife, Abby, doesn't cope as well. Then, when new test results contradict what they've been told, Abby begins to doubt the integrity of the doctors themselves. As Stan's condition continues to inexplicably improve, Abby and Stan grow further apart.
